The cover photo was taken on August 7, celebrating the sale of Plainfield Hardware to Plainfield Co-op. State and regional economic development folks joined Co-op lenders, Plainfield Hardware staff and owners, customers and Co-op Board members to celebrate the sale. (Photo was taken by Hazel Brewster of the VT Dept. of Economic Development.) The Co-op relocation project was named one of the top ten central Vermont economic development projects for 2024.
Our theme for this issue, “The Road Is Open!,” refers to Route 2 between Plainfield and the Hardware Store re-opening. And it means the Co-op transition from Plainfield village to Route 2 is happening. The newsletter is including more content about the Hardware Store. This issue Gail Falk traces the history of the Plainfield Hardware business from a small appliance store in the village through its sale this year to the Plainfield Co-op. She also shows us around the Deli—its growth, its menu and its staff.
The Treasurer’s Report is finally full of good news as the Co-op finances are boosted by combining with the successful finances of the Hardware Store. The President looks back at all the efforts that enabled us to get here, and she looks at where we are now and the steps ahead. You may find your questions about the transition answered in her report.
As always, you will find yummy seasonal recipes collected and edited by Debra Stoleroff—for fall, a soup, a fruit torte, and pickled vegetables.
We continue to invite your letters, poems, cartoons, whatever. Deadline for submissions for our winter issue is January 15.
