Spring is bustin’ out all over—in the pots and hanging baskets of flowers in the greenhouse, and the trays of veggie and herb seedlings ready to set into your garden; in more local, fresh produce in the grocery section; and in the expanded choice of tools in the hardware section for your warm weather DIY projects.
Speaking of spring building projects, your Co-op has plenty of those and opportunities to help out (see the Building Committee report). We are a co-operative business; we’re all in this together. In good times, member-owners share in the profits; in lean times or when profits must go for urgent needs, like a leaking roof, we pitch in as we can with our skills, our time, donations, and especially shopping more often for more items. Do you really need to go to Montpelier or Burlington for that, especially considering the price of gas? If it’s not in stock, maybe the Co-op could special order it for you.
Jeannine, our General Manager, always gives a comprehensive report of what’s going on in the store and behind the scenes, including the financial picture. The financials may be especially important to those of us who lived through past financial crises, but they matter to all of us member-owners. There are no stockholders—just us. The Board and General Manager work hard to keep the ship afloat.
As usual, there are recipes, most or all of whose ingredients are available at the Co-op. This time there’s a bonus of amazing facts about rhubarb along with two recipes. Yummy food, beautiful flowers and a humorous twist on something Co-op-y from Theis Bergstrom make for good reading in difficult times. While we can’t get the nations to co-operate, we can be an example of good will and working together in our little corner of the world.
You are invited to contribute to this newsletter—a letter to the editor, a poem, a photo, a cartoon, a Co-op memory. Deadline for the next, summer issue is August 1.
