The Building Committee has continued to support the Co-op this summer as building projects and maintenance needs have come up. One of the projects we recently supported was the cooler renovation, which included some unexpected repairs to the building itself.

As part of the cooler work, and because a new platform was needed for the replacement compressor, the old siding had to be removed so that the condition of the wall could be inspected. Once the siding was removed, it became clear that there were a number of rotten studs underneath, as well as areas of insulation that needed attention. The damaged studs were replaced and, after the repairs were completed, the new T-111 siding was put back in place. The final step was to build a 6-by-8-foot platform to support the new cooler compressor. Barry Walz, Joe John, and Mike Brosky worked on this project, helping to make sure the new equipment had a solid and properly supported place to go.

While the committee has been quieter this summer, there is still plenty to do to keep the Co-op building in good shape. We are also looking ahead and hoping to bring some new members onto the Building Committee. Several key members have recently left the committee, and we would really welcome some fresh ideas and new perspectives as we continue to tackle the many facility and building-related challenges that come with operating the Co-op.

You don’t need to be a professional contractor or have extensive building experience to participate. We are particularly interested in people who enjoy building and construction-related projects, are comfortable working as part of a team, and can attend monthly or bi-monthly committee meetings. There are plenty of opportunities to contribute, whether through hands-on projects, helping think through building needs, or simply bringing a new perspective to the committee.
