About This Newsletter, Summer 2025
by Glenda Bissex, Editor
It’s a short but glorious season here. Walk into the produce section and find new treats every time—real tomatoes, all kinds of greens, corn, yellow and green and red peppers, luscious Pennsylvania peaches (yellow and white), blueberries, plums, mangos—such colors! Different colors mean different nutrients so multi-color meals tend to be balanced.
The Co-op is trying hard to provide choices for everyone in many departments. In “Different Products for Different Shoppers”, Manager Jeannine DeWald explains how the store chooses products for the grocery department. Pet owners have lots of choices, too, as you’ll learn in “Bow-Wow, Meow, Tweet-Tweet.” In “Black Goats and Little Rascals,” Theis Bergstrom explores two regions in Italy and two grapes that produce some of the many wines on the Co-op shelves. The Co-op is here for you, its members and shoppers, so let staff know what you’d like to see in your store.

“Summer Bounty” is our theme for this issue. But it’s hard not to think of those who do not enjoy a bounty, who do not even have enough—people around the world and people in our own neighborhoods. Trying not to take my full belly for granted, I want to eat with consciousness and gratitude. I want to avoid wasting food myself, and I want to support groups like Community Harvest that glean imperfect but perfectly nutritious food from farms so it goes to people, not to waste. If you’re a gardener, perhaps you grew an extra row. You can always buy some extra food to donate to your local food shelf. Or gift someone a Co-op membership. There are many ways to share the bounty.
